20x compute advantage buys only ~6 months of model lead, says researcher

A sober calculation from ohlennart: even a 20x compute advantage only buys roughly 6 months of lead on model capabilities — the efficiency exponentials are real.
That estimate doesn't even include anti-distillation measures; with those, the lead might stretch to 12 months. The implication: brute-force compute doesn't buy a durable moat, and the pace of algorithmic efficiency diffusion is the dominant variable shaping the competitive landscape.
