A fully offline AI agent on a 6GB local model: $0 bill, data never leaves the laptop

The author argues most agents don't need an API key — the default pattern of shipping your docs to someone else's servers is unnecessary for many use cases.
His fully local stack:
- Gemma 3n E4B on Ollama as the LLM
- nomic-embed-text for embeddings
- Chroma as local vector DB
- LangChain agent with tools
- Streamlit for the chat UI
Key insight: switching from cloud to local is often a one-line change; the code barely moves. The honest tradeoff is a 6GB model won't match frontier APIs on hard reasoning, but for Q&A over your own docs it gets answers right — verified against the source files. In return you get privacy, zero cost, and full offline operation.
