Turn your AI coding chat into an ADR and commit it with the fix, says dev
Ok_Negotiation_2587 · reddit · 2026-10-14
A developer shares a workflow for converting AI coding conversations into architecture decision records (ADRs): git preserves what changed, but the why — the approaches tried and rejected — usually dies in a chat nobody will find again, inviting someone to later "simplify" code back into the buggy version.
Before committing a real decision, he sends one final prompt asking the AI to write a sub-250-word Markdown ADR from that conversation only: context in 2-3 sentences for a newcomer, the decision in one sentence, each alternative with the specific reason it was rejected, and consequences including what would trigger a revisit.
Two key details:
- Instructing the AI "don't invent options" is critical — otherwise you get a tidy list of alternatives nobody considered, worse than no record.
- The ADR goes in docs/decisions/ in the same commit as the fix, with a one-line pointer in the commit message, so git blame leads straight to the reasoning.
He also mentions exporting the full chat alongside via his browser extension AI Toolbox (plain-text export is free; Markdown is Premium).
