Deft: Open-source self-hosted workspace unifying chat, tasks and knowledge with MCP
maneek21 · reddit · 2026-10-14
An indie developer open-sourced Deft (AGPL-3.0, deployable via Docker Compose on a VPS), combining chat, task management and a knowledge base into one self-hosted workspace — aiming to replace Slack, Linear and Notion in a single system.
Key points:
- Invoke an agent directly in chat to create tasks with approval cards; chats, tasks, CRM and connected apps automatically weave into a shared knowledge graph usable as context by agents and humans
- Connects Claude and ChatGPT via MCP; the core workspace runs without any AI provider
- An experimental App Kit supports sideloadable apps — a CRM is the first example ("a fancy CSV"), with an email client next to prove the architecture generalizes
The author built it largely with Claude Code (Opus doing planning and coding). The walkthrough video uses an AI voiceover since the author, who stutters, couldn't record it after a week of trying. Still alpha; feedback welcome.
