λ-JEPA preprint shows high-rank projections don't guarantee non-collapsed JEPA backbones
FrancescoLocat8 · x · 2026-10-14
A new preprint questions an implicit assumption in JEPA-style architectures: does preventing collapse in the projected representation we actually use downstream guarantee the backbone hasn't collapsed? The answer: not necessarily — a high-rank projected representation does not ensure a non-collapsed backbone. The authors propose λ-JEPA, designed to target this gap directly.
