Synesthete turns your code into music so you can hear what Claude Code is doing
dchacke · reddit · 2026-10-14
Developer Dennis Hackethal had Claude Code build Synesthete, a free open-source Sublime Text package that composes music from your code in real time, so you can get a feel for what a coding agent is changing without watching files.
Mapping rules:
- Deeper indentation plays higher; each line's text picks the exact note
- Function definitions bring in bass; broken lines sound dissonant
- Code quality picks the instrument: harp for clean code, singing saw for cursed code
- Project mode listens to a whole folder: every file Claude Code changes plays an accent, plus a code map and WebGL tunnel visualization
The build itself is a case study in agent-driven development: the author only listened and gave feedback — synthesized sounds "like a broken TV" led to public-domain orchestral samples; project mode was tuned by having Claude commit good and bad changes to a test repo every few seconds; flashing visuals were made epilepsy-safe. Quality judgment uses Sublime syntax definitions plus per-language parsers.
Free and open source; demo with sound on the author's blog.
