XState v6 author explains the shift to pure functions and the static analysis tradeoff
DavidKPiano · x · 2026-10-14
XState creator David Khourshid responded to concerns about v6's move toward pure functions, citing better type-safety and less DSL ceremony:
- Type narrowing carries through if/etc branches, giving transitions' actions/updates correctly narrowed types; declarative guards don't narrow types, causing bugs or redundant double-typing
- Conditional/dynamic actions become plain JS — no helpers needed for if/loops
- Shared actions are written once instead of duplicated per branch
- Effects stay explicit via enq(…)
- Transitions can still be plain objects like { target: 'loading' }, minus inline actions/guards
On the static-analysis concern, he said the team is doing substantial work to extract as much as possible and lint what can't be extracted; the old workaround via raised events made models more complex, while functions keep it simple.
