Modal publishes the manual for serving trillions of tokens to coding agents
charles_irl · x · 2026-10-13
Modal engineers (Janelle Cai, Charles Frye, et al.) published "How to serve trillions of tokens for trillion-parameter coding agents," arguing that inference for coding agents must achieve both extremely high relative performance (large fractions of hardware peak rate) and massive absolute scale — since inference is set to consume more compute than all other uses of computing.
The post opens up their full engineering playbook, framed as: "want to compete with Modal on LLM inference? Here's the manual."
