Amazon flooded with AI-written books that are crowding out human authors, study finds
TuhinChakr · x · 2026-10-13
A new paper on AI and copyright used full-text AI detection from Pangram to study self-published genre fiction on Amazon from 2023 through March 2026.
The findings: Amazon is flooded with books containing substantial AI-generated text, these books earn significant revenue, and—most importantly—they crowd out sales of non-AI books. The authors note a book doesn't need quality to have market impact; it just needs to exist in the thousands, which generative AI enables. Co-authors span UMich, Stony Brook, and Columbia Law (Jane Ginsburg).
