Ratio9 synth uses local MCP to let AI design patches with live spectrogram feedback
sporeman456 · reddit · 2026-10-13
Developer Max released Ratio9 1.2.1, including a free standalone wavetable synth for Apple Silicon Macs, showcasing a local stdio MCP use case for sound design: the AI assistant reads and changes synth controls, picks wavetables, shapes modulation, and requests live spectrum/spectrogram measurements while the synth plays, iterating on patches based on harmonic and frequency-balance feedback.
- Workflow: ask for a bass sound, let the assistant set oscillators and modulation, inspect measurements, refine, then take over manually. Final patch quality still needs musical judgment.
- Setup: the synth's AI panel provides "Copy AI Setup" (MCP config) and a starter prompt; installer bundles the helper runtime, no separate Python needed; AI is off by default; you bring your own MCP client and AI account.
- Synth: 3 wavetable oscillators with warp/unison, 6 LFOs, 8 macros, 2 filters, sampler, multiband FX, 42 presets, 220 wavetables. Standalone free; VST3+AU $79.99 one-time (two Macs). Alpha software — complex presets can spike CPU.
