UCSB researchers land $1M NSF grant for AI that models higher-order interactions

UCSB researchers Nina Miolane, Haewon Jeong, Yao Qin, and Sanjukta Krishnagopal received a $1 million NSF award to build AI that discovers scientific laws of complex systems — the first federal grant for UCSB's Real AI initiative.
Current AI-for-science methods mostly model pairwise relationships, missing the higher-order interactions that produce emergent behavior. The team wants models that capture overlapping multi-component interactions across scales and time. Jeong notes LLMs are good at answering questions but remain weak at predicting whole-system behavior.
