AI Doesn't Need Consciousness to Cause Harm — Bengio-Backed Report Assessed
CurieuxExplorer · x · 2026-10-13
The author argues the more immediate danger than AI consciousness is that AI can cause harm without being conscious: give a system real-world capabilities with poorly specified objectives or insufficient oversight and errors have consequences.
On consciousness itself, a scientific report co-authored by Yoshua Bengio and others evaluated AI systems against indicators from theories of consciousness: no evidence they are conscious, but no obvious technical barrier to systems satisfying those indicators either. The science remains open.
