Latent Personality Alignment: safer LLMs without any harmful training examples
burkov · x · 2026-10-13
Andriy Burkov introduces Latent Personality Alignment (LPA), a novel safety defense framework. The article argues conventional guardrails have two weaknesses:
- They rely on large databases of harmful prompts with scripted refusals, which attackers bypass via rephrasing and novel jailbreaks.
- Existing defenses need hundreds of thousands of toxic examples and badly degrade normal task performance.
LPA instead trains models to embody abstract positive personality traits with zero exposure to harmful examples, testing whether this reliably improves safety without toxic data. Full results in the linked article.
