Nathan Benaich released the 9th annual State of AI Report. Key takes: the frontier is now a three-lab race between Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google; AI is officially helping build AI; inference revenue is exploding; physical robotics is approaching its moment; and cyber risks are escalating.
A featured slide covers Anthropic's internal automation index: the share of model R&D tasks rated "AI leads" rose from under 1% in February 2026 to 26% by August — Claude completes most of a task from a high-level prompt while a human supervises. Over 90% of measured work now involves substantial AI collaboration or leadership, though none is fully autonomous yet.
