Codex Windows app crashes after sign-in, minidump points to windows-updater.node
Manutebi · ghdev · 2026-10-10
Multiple users report the OpenAI Codex desktop app (Microsoft Store build 26.1007.2314.0) crashing within 65 seconds after signing in, while the same account works fine in the browser.
A WinDbg analysis of the Crashpad minidump localizes the fault to a null-pointer read in windows-updater.node (0xc0000005). Repair/Reset, reinstalling, and renaming %APPDATA%\Codex\web did not help, and similar crash signatures appear in issues #52646, #52653, #52029, and #51824. No official fix or workaround yet.
