CoreWeave Launches Model Distillation Preview to Cut Frontier-Model Costs
altryne · x · 2026-10-12
CoreWeave's Model Distillation is in preview in CoreWeave Forge: after tuning a frontier model's prompts to production quality, you can train a smaller open-weight model via managed serverless SFT on real production examples, evaluate candidates against your current model on held-out traffic, then shift traffic gradually.
Highlights:
- Production examples become training data; training infra is managed
- Compare candidates on your own traffic, inspecting individual judgments, not just aggregate scores
- Slice-based rollout with one-change rollback; models stay portable
- Close the loop: new traffic builds the next dataset
Goal: stop paying frontier prices for a single well-defined task — "distilling, legally!"
