Claude Code Rewind bug reportedly wiped ~20 hours of edits across 135 files

A bug report (issue #101188) on anthropics/claude-code describes a severe data-loss incident: the Rewind/restore feature said it couldn't restore, yet overwrote files on disk anyway without rewinding the conversation.
Key details:
- 20 hours of edits across 135 tracked files were lost; 8 files created afterward were deleted entirely. The user wasn't using git, so nothing was recoverable.
- By diffing against /.claude/file-history snapshots (24k transcript lines, 107 snapshots), the user found 102/135 files byte-identical to a snapshot from 45+ minutes earlier than the restore point selected in the UI — suggesting Rewind picked the wrong checkpoint.
- Dozens of files were rewritten within the same second, and the issue carries bug, has-repro, and data-loss labels.
Practical takeaway for heavy Claude Code users: commit to git frequently and don't rely on Rewind as version control.
