Unlinked: open-source Rust project clones most of Simulink, with MATLAB-to-Rust compiler
rickasaurus · x · 2026-10-12
Developer @meawoppl announced the open-source project Unlinked, which has cloned most of MATLAB Simulink's functionality. It's a Rust web application that opens Simulink diagrams, shares versioned models within organizations, and runs a growing subset of their simulations.
Technically, it includes a MATLAB/Octave-to-Rust compiler with LLVM IR output via rustc, and follows a single-binary Rust website architecture: Yew compiled to WebAssembly, Axum serving embedded frontend assets, shared Rust protocol types, and PostgreSQL with Diesel migrations. Apache-2.0 licensed, currently at 42 stars. Commenters note it will be interesting once people decompile and rebuild every piece of CAD/CAM and simulation software.
