Building a ModRetro game with his daughter and Codex: 5 concrete design fixes
petergyang · x · 2026-10-12
- Peter Yang shares how he's building a game called Wildwood Wishes for the ModRetro Chromatic handheld with his daughter using Codex.
- When asked for improvement suggestions, Codex inspected the code itself, finding 15 enemies across six areas but only one enemy type (a beetle), then proposed five fixes: tighten the beetle's 16×16 collision box, add three distinct enemies (patrolling beetles, hopping frogs, flying bees), make damage feel fair with three hearts plus invincibility frames, give each area a memorable challenge (bouncy mushrooms, carrot puzzles, secret routes), and end with a readable beetle boss fight.
- The result installs directly on the Chromatic — a full example of parent-child game dev with AI coding agents.
