LangChain founder lays out three models for enterprise agent identity
hwchase17 · x · 2026-10-12
LangChain founder Harrison Chase discusses how identity should work for internal company agents. Austinbv argues agents work like people across modalities: sometimes acting as individuals with tools ("I updated the deal in HubSpot"), sometimes on behalf of teams and systems ("the infra team needs us to migrate").
Chase outlines three models for agent identity:
- A fixed set of credentials
- An "on behalf of" flow that borrows the credentials of whoever is using it
- A hybrid of the two
The upshot: future audits will say "the agent submitted a ServiceNow ticket to finance on behalf of Cathy," so agents need identities tied to both their actions and their operators.
