Codex Skills advertise child resources that resources/read rejects as Unknown resource
daken123-gif · ghdev · 2026-10-11
A bug report against the ChatGPT-hosted Codex app shows an inconsistency between Skills and MCP resource reads:
- resources/list exposes the mcp/skill package root, and reading it succeeds — the root response advertises exact child-resource URIs in meta.resources (e.g. skill://user/<id>/<name>/references/example.md).
- Calling MCP resources/read on such an advertised URI returns -32002: Unknown resource, while skills.read on the same URI fails with failed to read skill resource.
- The issue reproduces across two different user Skill packages, ruling out a single broken file.
The reporter compared against public openai/codex commit cc7ba336 and notes the bundle URL exposed by the root is not an equivalent documented read path. The issue has drawn 9 comments.
