How a phone-case pocket took Rhode to $212M in sales and a $1B e.l.f. acquisition

- Beauty brand Rhode launched in 2022 in the most crowded categories (lip balm, moisturizer), yet was acquired by e.l.f. for $1 billion three years later, with $212 million in annual sales.
- The differentiator was a 2024 silicone phone case with a molded pocket holding its $18 lip tint, followed by a carabiner for blush, and now the same pocket design in a Hunter rain boot collab.
- The logic: lip balm normally hides in pockets where nobody sees the label; Rhode moved it to the outside of everyday carry—every tint pulled from a phone case at a restaurant is free product placement.
