Open-source typesafe-computer-use cuts agent cost 155x by skipping screenshots and frontier models

A new open-source project, typesafe-computer-use, avoids sending screenshots to frontier models entirely.
Typical computer-use agents ship a full screenshot to a frontier model and wait 5 seconds for a plan at every step. This one takes a deterministic pipeline instead:
- Reads the screen locally via OCR, then hands a tiny classifier a short list of candidate actions to pick the next move
- Only wakes a writing model when a text field genuinely needs free text
- Every click carries a calibrated confidence score, with a threshold for human takeover
Reported numbers are striking:
- $0.0002 per step vs $0.032 for Claude Opus — 155x cheaper per decision
- $0.003 per 12-step task vs $0.40–0.90 — up to 300x cheaper
- 0.13–0.38s model latency vs 5.2s — up to 40x faster
The core insight: most steps don't need a plan, just one fast, cheap choice from a short list.
