Data companies making $1B a year aren't NGMI — RSI shifts the bottleneck to unique data
geoffwolfe · x · 2026-10-10
A quoted thread argues the AI value chain is shifting:
- Core claim (@quxiaoyin): people mock data companies making $1B a year as NGMI, but that's wrong. As RSI becomes more accessible, the bottleneck moves from 'a math genius who knows training recipes' to 'access to high-quality, uniquely curated data.'
- Implication: AI is already the biggest math genius — what's scarce is data with a strong point of view. Whoever owns it can sell to labs or train a model that beats them.
- Counterpoint (@ReasonCoreAI): plenty of hill climbing remains in STEM; AI can discover novel things but can't yet fully reason through long-horizon research tasks.
The substantive debate: AI's scarcest resource is shifting from talent to proprietary data.
