AI as bureaucracy's amplifier: the Jevons paradox is coming for paperwork
r0ck3t23 · x · 2026-10-10
A viral thread argues AI could become the greatest productivity tool for people who produce nothing: near-unlimited ability to demand proof that others are working. Invoking Jevons' 1865 observation that more efficient steam engines increased coal consumption, the author predicts bureaucracy will follow the same pattern — a 40-page report once took three days, now AI generates one in seconds; one report becomes ten, ten become a dashboard, the dashboard needs weekly reviews, and soon half the organization documents the other half. Institutions have long confused evidence of activity with evidence of accomplishment, and people whose authority depends on oversight have every incentive to invent more of it.
