A browser typewriter built in one Claude Code session, sounds tuned from spectrograms
oxmannnn · reddit · 2026-10-09
The author built Platen, a fully typeable browser typewriter made by Claude Code (Opus 5.5) in one session — with typebar strikes, the margin bell 8 characters early, carriage return, correction tape or 1958-style overstrike, and live-synthesized Web Audio sounds (no samples). Includes typewriter-art mode and step-by-step guides for real machines.
How Claude built it:
- Started from a short module spec; three subagents worked in parallel on the sound engine, paper/ink renderer, and drawing tools
- Self-checked visuals by driving a headless browser and reviewing screenshots round after round
- Can't hear, so sounds were tuned from spectrograms and level measurements against real typebar/escapement/bell mechanics
- Stack: Three.js, Web Audio, plain JavaScript, no build step
