ChatGPT web bug: editing an older prompt after page refresh appends it as a new message
Moon_Dew · reddit · 2026-10-09
User MoonDew reports a ChatGPT web bug since October 8: after refreshing the page, editing an earlier prompt no longer branches the conversation—it instead submits the edit as a brand-new message appended to the end.
Systematic reproduction testing:
- Editing in a fresh session, after 20+ minutes idle, or after switching conversations: all work normally
- The only trigger appears to be a full page refresh followed by an edit
- Clearing cache, disabling extensions, incognito mode, and other browsers don't help
Tested on desktop Chrome/Windows; the author is asking others to confirm reproduction.
