TerminusDB Gets Alembic-Style Migration Tooling for Graph Schemas
JeremyCMorgan · x · 2026-10-09
The community package terminusdb-migrations 0.2.1 brings an Alembic-style schema migration workflow to the TerminusDB graph database.
- Migration files live in a Git repo under migrations/versions/, each declaring revision, downrevision, upgrade, and downgrade.
- It supports explicit revision chains, upgrade/downgrade execution, database revision tracking, interrupted-migration detection, and a Python operation DSL on top of the native TerminusDB Migration API.
- Migration callbacks are deliberately synchronous and declarative, only building an in-memory migration plan while database I/O stays asynchronous in the runner; async functions, generator functions, or callbacks returning a value are rejected before state changes.
- The same chain can be applied independently to development, staging, and production databases.
- Initialize with tdb-migrate init, optionally with --migrations-dir.
- Requires Python 3.11+ and depends on terminusdb-async and terminusdb-pydantic.
- It is pre-1.0; the author advises reviewing migration files and dry-running destructive changes before use on production data. It is a community package, not an official TerminusDB project.
