PartyKit shuts down free hosted platform 2.5 years after Cloudflare acquisition
threepointone · x · 2026-10-09
Sunil Pai announced the shutdown of the free hosted PartyKit platform (.partykit.dev), two and a half years after PartyKit was acquired by Cloudflare. Effort has shifted to PartyServer, which offers the same rooms/connections/broadcasting/hibernation model but runs as a regular Worker with Durable Objects on users' own Cloudflare accounts, and underpins the Cloudflare Agents SDK.
Timeline
- Oct 9: no new projects or preview environments
- Oct 12: projects inactive for 3 months removed
- Oct 16: deploys turned off; deadline to export room data
- Oct 23: hosted platform fully shut down, remaining projects and data deleted; npx partykit deploy stops working
What to do
- New projects: use PartyServer with wrangler; works on the Workers free plan
- Existing projects: migrate to wrangler.c; partysocket clients keep working once repointed
- Room data: must be self-exported before Oct 16; the guide provides an export endpoint and copy script
