Shopify adds Grok and agent connectors; sellers may build AI storefronts to dodge 2.9% fees

Shopify announced new connectors letting merchants hook up Grok to ask questions about their business and build teams of agents to run operations. Reacting, DanielFarina runs the numbers: Shopify Basic costs $39/mo with Shopify Payments at 2.9% + 30¢, Grow is $105/mo at 2.7% + 30¢, and Advanced is $399/mo at 2.5% + 30¢. He predicts sellers will instead buy AI subscriptions and build their own storefronts to avoid platform fees — a real substitution effect between platform commissions and cheap AI tooling.
