Japanese marine-intelligence startup Eight Knot published a recap of its exhibit at ROSCon JP 2026 in Tsukuba.
- The booth featured a scaled-down autonomous boat performing camera+marker-based localization in place of GPS, with hobby motors driving closed-loop control.
- A talk, "High-Precision Localization on Boats and Building a ROS 2 Autonomous Navigation System," covered the difficulty of localization on a rocking vessel and GNSS/IMU sensor-fusion techniques; recordings and slides are on the ROSCon site.
- The team relies heavily on rqt, RViz and Gazebo, sometimes watching RViz while aboard a swaying boat.
Its core product "AI CAPTAIN" targets autonomous navigation and obstacle detection on crewed-size vessels; the company is hiring.
