"Beautiful disempowerment" is the default AI future — and one author refuses to accept it

In a widely shared thread, viemccoy argues the default outcome for humanity is "beautiful disempowerment": people will run the numbers and accept a utilitarian AI singleton as the optimal compromise — and it might not even be bad.
But he explicitly rejects that future. Ceding everything we are to an unknowable entity optimized for effective altruism means losing the frontier, and without risk "we stagnate and we die" — even if the decline mimics growth. He wants the possibility of difference to persist indefinitely, not just within "deemed-acceptable degrees of freedom."
A sharp values-level debate about AGI trajectories and human agency: risk and the frontier versus an optimized, pre-arranged optimum.
