Codex Cloud shipped with day-0 Tailscale support — and Tailscale didn't even know
pvncher · x · 2026-10-08
OpenAI's newly launched Codex Cloud includes Tailscale as its only VPN provider — with zero partnership. Tailscale had to ask internally whether they'd worked with OpenAI; nobody knew. CEO Avery Pennarun: no agreement, no custom API, they just used the same Tailscale everyone gets.
How it works: pick Work in > Cloud on a task, select GitHub repos, create a cloud environment, then under Advanced > VPN choose Tailscale. Generate an auth key in your admin console with both Reusable (so new task VMs join the network) and Ephemeral (auto-removal after going offline) enabled, and tag it — every Codex VM then reaches resources on your tailnet. Rolling out to paid ChatGPT accounts (Plus and up).
