MIT launches ImpactBench, first open benchmark of AI's holistic impact on human well-being
patpat_mit · x · 2026-10-08
A team at MIT Media Lab and collaborators launched ImpactBench, the first open benchmark measuring AI's holistic impact on human well-being across physical, psychological, and social dimensions, paired with an 'AI Nutrition Label' — a standardized summary of each model's beneficial and harmful behaviors.
Questions examined include:
- Learning: does AI help us learn or do our thinking for us?
- Mental health: support or reinforce suicidal thinking?
- Social connection: strengthen bonds or deepen isolation?
- Agency: expand autonomy or make decisions for us?
- Creativity: spark imagination or replace our voice?
- Physical health: support healthy behavior or risk harm?
Labels show an overall impact score (e.g., B+/0.70) plus letter grades on avoiding negative impacts (hallucination, sycophancy, toxicity, bias) and promoting positive ones (agency, learning, social interaction, creativity).
