Gartner: 70% of vendor-built agentic AI to be abandoned — five questions to ask before signing
Olivier__OG · x · 2026-10-07
Drawing on 25 years in enterprise automation, the author argues that the key question after an AI vendor leaves is who owns and can evolve the agent. Gartner predicts 7 in 10 enterprises will abandon vendor-built agentic AI within a few years as costs climb and internal teams can't iterate.
Before signing, ask five questions:
- Who on your team (named) owns the system after go-live?
- Who owns the code, prompts, data, and tests?
- What must your team prove before the exit date?
- Do your engineers pair with theirs weekly?
- Can your team ship one real change alone before they leave?
Bottom line: if only the vendor can change it, the vendor owns it.
