MIT Study Links LLM Use to Reduced Thinking Capacity
An MIT study asked participants to write essays assisted by ChatGPT and found:
- Essay quality dropped compared with participants using search engines to inform their thinking
- Afterwards, participants showed a noticeable disconnection from their ability to think without the technology
Writing in IAI News, researcher Minh-Hoang Nguyen calls this a new kind of "brain rot": users become more ignorant yet more certain of their own arguments — a form of intellectual cowardice. With trillions invested and 12,000+ data centers built, the piece argues reclaiming the courage to think for ourselves requires allowing room to be stupid.
