Katja Grace: Excusing the AI Race With AI's Upsides Is a Mistake
KatjaGrace · x · 2026-10-07
AI safety researcher Katja Grace argues that excusing racing toward AI because of its upsides is usually a mistake. The real choice is between scaling current tech as fast as possible versus waiting until we know what we're doing at each step—the latter has virtually as much long-term upside but a better chance of realizing it.
She judges that today's AI labs are roughly doing the former, and working on the latter effectively probably means being outside the lab system.
