DJ app's MCP server lets Claude drive real synths and drums instead of generating audio
tech_sand · reddit · 2026-10-07
The devs of DJ House Music, a Mac DJ app, took the opposite path from prompt-to-audio tools: their MCP server generates no audio at all. It exposes the same controls a human has—gettrack, playnote, playchord, hitdrum, selectinstrument, setchain, setstep, exportwav—and the app's own synths, drum machine and decks make the sound.
Lessons from building it:
- Passing scale notes into context basically eliminated wrong notes
- Many small single-purpose tools beat one big "make a song" tool; the model plans better step by step
- Great at structure (when the bass drops, where claps land), bad at groove—hi-hats come out dead straight until you ask for swing
Because it writes patterns rather than audio, every step stays visible and editable—more jamming than ordering a track. Music stays on your Mac; only the prompt goes to the model. One-time $59.99 with a 7-day trial.
