New preprint: AI use among STEM PhDs correlates with leaving academia

The paper link (quoted context) for the study analyzing 227,000 American STEM PhD dissertation abstracts (2019–May 2026): AI use, detected via Pangram, correlates with a lower likelihood of working in academia and a higher likelihood of industry roles, plus more non-tenure-track academic positions. Correlational only, but it raises concerns that offloading writing may erode the core skills of scientific training.
