Dev tests AI 3D mesh generation: 1M+ polygon meshes and broken UV mapping
Love2Code · x · 2026-10-05
Developer Love2Code tried AI 3D mesh generation and concluded it's 'all terrible':
- Image-to-mesh generators output meshes with insane polygon counts (1M+), hard to reduce because each tiny polygon is treated like a pixel, with noisy surfaces.
- Texture mapping is awful — random bits scattered everywhere instead of a clean UV unwrap.
- Asking frontier models to directly create 3D models produces boxy or cartoonish results: fine for crates, barrels, chairs or desks, but not realistic or detailed character models.
He's asking for tips, especially on generating low-poly meshes (hundreds to low thousands of polygons).
