Dev's Ultrafast review: 6x token cost, $500 plan hits weekly limits every 1-2 days
holdenmatt · x · 2026-10-06
Developer Matt Holden shares hands-on experience with OpenAI's "Ultrafast" high-speed mode:
- Fast enough to change habits: once used to it, AI feels slow without it — great for single-threaded focus on one top-priority task, but he turns it off for multitasking across 3-5 parallel workstreams (bugs, polish, small UI features).
- Cost is double-edged: 6x per-token price, plus higher token usage since results come faster. He upgraded to the $500/month plan 4 days ago and hits the weekly limit every 1-2 days of normal use, already burning 2 resets.
- Takeaway: a short-term tradeoff — models will soon be smarter, faster AND cheaper, so paying extra now is like living a bit in the future.
