A systems engineer used Claude Code to build elmiracorningevents.com, aggregating events scattered across 101 sources (libraries, breweries, school districts, chambers) in the Elmira, NY area.
Key numbers and approach
- 1,855 listings over 90 days, 1,767 events after dedup; 2/3 free; library programs are 65% of everything
- 8,300 lines of PHP/JS/CSS, no framework, no build step, running on GoDaddy shared hosting + SQLite; cron fetches every 6 hours (8.5 min full run), zero AI calls at runtime
- Each source is one PHP array entry; most reuse generic readers (WordPress REST, ICS/Google Calendar with full recurring-event support, Squarespace, Wix, RSS, JSON-LD), 20 sites get custom parsers
- Dedup happens at display time: dates overlap + ≥60% title word overlap; distinct known venues never merge; venue's own listing wins over chamber/tourism copies
- Admin page tracks per-source health (ok/quiet/warning/failing/dead), which keeps 101 scrapers maintainable
No ads, accounts, or cookies; organizers submit events free. The author says he couldn't have hand-built the 18 phases without Claude Code.
