Open-source LCU decouples Codex Computer Use so any AI agent can drive it via MCP
xiaohu · x · 2026-10-06
- Project: amontlabs/lcu extracts Codex's computer-use runtime from the ChatGPT desktop app and exposes it via MCP so any agent harness (Claude Code, Codex CLI, Pi) can use it — no ChatGPT/Codex login needed, though the official desktop app must be installed locally to supply the runtime, with instructions and permission policies taken verbatim from OpenAI.
- Interface: Instead of separate screenshot/click/type tools, LCU exposes only js and jsreset. The model writes JavaScript against a preset cua object: getState() for desktop state, getApp to pick a window, then click, typeText, pressKey, getScreenshot, etc. Multi-step operations fit in one call, and the JS environment persists variables across calls; jsreset clears it on failure.
- Extras: Beyond screenshots, it can read accessibility-tree info and click by element instead of coordinates. Repo records show the macOS init instructions are byte-identical to what official Codex receives.
- Adapters: Officially supports Pi, Codex CLI, and Claude Code; Oh My Pi and Hermes are experimental. Early users suggest configuring a hook with an app whitelist.
