Free live TTS: an Edge TTS script that streams sentence-by-sentence with parallel generation
Speedk4011 · reddit · 2026-10-06
A Reddit user shared a live TTS script (from their yasbd-lib examples) that uses the free Microsoft Edge TTS service via the open-source edge-tts package — no paid API key required.
Key implementation details:
- Splits text into sentences with a BoundaryDetector
- Generates audio for multiple sentences in parallel into temp mp3 files via a ThreadPoolExecutor
- Plays each file with miniaudio as it completes, producing near-real-time sentence-by-sentence playback
- Installs a custom asyncio exception handler to silently swallow Edge TTS's noisy 'Connection lost' and SSL handshake errors
Dependencies are just yasbd-lib, miniaudio, edgetts, and aiofiles; the full code is free to copy for your own projects.
