Neco Turns a Local LLM Into a Persistent 'Resident' of Your Machine
Ok_Hedgehog_8337 · reddit · 2026-10-05
A Reddit user open-sourced Neco, an experiment built on Ollama and Open WebUI that turns a local LLM from an open-and-close assistant into a persistent presence on the machine:
- A read-only system layer gives it awareness of host state: uptime, memory usage, load, battery, temperatures.
- A background daemon runs outside normal chat sessions, periodically generating "idle thoughts" so the model produces something on its own between conversations.
- The model has no unrestricted shell access, and everything stays local.
Next up is memory: episodic memory, selective retrieval, and a small evolving state so conversations, events, and unresolved thoughts persist across weeks or months without dumping full history into context. The repo is public and the author is soliciting input from others working on persistent memory and autonomous behavior.
