OpenAI Starts Testing Visual Ads in ChatGPT Image Generation for Free Users
gaganghotra_ · x · 2026-10-05
OpenAI will begin testing a new visual ad format in the US later this month, initially showing sponsored products and services when users generate images in ChatGPT, per The Verge.
Key points:
- Ads stay separate from generated images; OpenAI says they won't influence ChatGPT's answers
- Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers won't see ads
- Guardrails aim to keep ads out of "emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable" contexts
- ChatGPT first introduced ads in February, previously showing only a name, logo, and link in a sponsored section
- OpenAI is testing with an initial group of advertisers and plans more ad formats
