Dev open-sources tools to run OpenAI's original 1.5B GPT-2 XL checkpoint on CPU-only WSL 2
MikePFrank · x · 2026-10-04
Developer MikePFrank released GPT-2-tools, an open-source project that runs OpenAI's original 1.5B-parameter GPT-2 XL checkpoint locally on a CPU-only machine (13th-gen i7, 32GB RAM, Ubuntu 24.04 under WSL 2). It uses Hugging Face's modern PyTorch/safetensors conversion of the historical weights rather than the archived 2019 TensorFlow 1.12 runner — same trained model, repacked. The repo ships setup.ps1/run.ps1 scripts for one-command setup, and a publicly hosted demo currently runs on an AWS Lightsail instance.
