SPEAR Simulator Opens Up 14K+ Unreal Engine Functions for Embodied AI Research
rsasaki0109 · x · 2026-10-04
SPEAR is a new open-source simulator for photorealistic embodied AI research.
- A Python library that connects to and programmatically controls any Unreal Engine application via a modular plugin architecture
- Exposes over 14,000 unique UE functions — an order-of-magnitude increase in programmable functionality over existing simulators
- Demonstrated with 6 distinct embodied agents (each with a different action space) across Epic Games sample projects: a person and car from CitySample, a flying robot from StackOBot, multi-agent play in CropoutSample, plus a parkour character and a quadruped robot
For embodied AI and robotics researchers, it offers a low-cost path to leverage UE's high-fidelity scenes and assets for training and evaluation.
