OpenRouter co-founder: agent products converging on the same primitives, like databases in 2005
sull · x · 2026-10-04
OpenRouter co-founder Alex Atallah pushes back on the "everyone is building the same thing" take about AI agents. He argues that the ubiquitous agent loop — notifications, third-party connectors, context management, memory, sandboxes, agentic web search, always-on agents — is just the new table-stakes primitives.
His analogy: a 2005 version of the same complaint would have said everyone builds "a database, a users table, a sign-in page, a profile page, a logout page — everything's the same." Yet massive differentiation emerged on top of those primitives.
Bottom line: shared components don't mean there's no room for product differentiation; the perceived homogenization is overblown.
