Cloudflare: pending I/O now keeps Durable Objects alive for agents without a connected client
irvinebroque · x · 2026-10-04
Cloudflare shipped a small but important Durable Objects change for long-running agents: all types of pending outbound I/O now keep the object active even when no client is connected.
What changed:
- Pending service binding calls, RPC, fetch(), and this.ctx.container.monitor() now prevent idle shutdown
- Promises passed to waitUntil() and pending setTimeout/setInterval timers get the same protection
- Previously, the object could be shut down mid-wait, killing unfinished work
Why it matters for agents: an agent can keep calling tools, coordinating with other Durable Objects, or waiting on a container process after the client disconnects. Each pending operation prevents eviction for up to 15 minutes, renewable — while avoiding the footgun of infinite wall time from a accidentally-left-open connection.
Default for compatibility date 2026-10-01+; use the durableobjectiotaskspreventeviction flag on older dates, or opt out with durableobjectiotasksdonotpreventeviction.
